The name’s brogue…
Emily Evans, Style Journal Editor & Stylist. September 2017.
Brogues should be a staple item for any man’s wardrobe. We’re often asked how to wear them, so this month, Emily guides you to the looks to complement your new brogues with style, elegance, and comfort.
Due to their working class roots, the brogue hasn’t always been a smart shoe, which is no longer the case and like most great designs it has stood the test of time.
Originally the brogue was created as a way for those living in the boggy areas of Scotland and Ireland to let water escape when walking through wet areas.
So, given the traditional roots of the brogue and their heritage, let’s start by keeping things simple, classic and stylish. Wear your brogues with a chino or jean. Definitely no tracksuits or gym wear with these bad boys. Keep colours minimal and match with functional wardrobe staples. Turned up hems on jeans are totally optional – if you have a selvedge seam, why not show it off?
Turn up in jeans
Hiut Denim – our go-to selvadge jeans – for a classic look.
The Worker’s Club Hooded Parka folds neatly into its own onboard pouch – ready for those Autumnal showers.

Keep it simple – pick a neutral plain and fitted tee.
Invited to Smart Casual – the most dumbfounding of sartorial phrases? Take a style cue from man of the moment, star of the Bond franchise and Logan Lucky, Daniel Craig. Mix a Pioneer 396 Black/Black Neo with formal trouser, tailored white shirt, and a cashmere pullover. Elegant lines and evening long comfort combined.
Of course, Brogues with a suit will always be a winning combination. For the ultimate take on the look – as seen on Tom Hiddleston – match a bold pin stripe suit with a pale blue or pink shirt. Keep your socks short and tonal. the dog is optional.
Pioneers and chill?
And finally, for those weekends when you just want to wrap up warm and relax? Take your cue from Charley Speed, throw on jeans, a casual shirt and layer up with an autumnal cardigan.
The main thing is to feel comfortable in what you already like to wear. Just remember by adding a bit of classic British Heritage to your denim and knitwear this Autumn or by giving your suits a new look, a good pair of Seven Feet Apart Brogues will add a bit of life and character to your winter wardrobe.
